How Many 'Remote' Jobs Are Actually Open Worldwide? (October 2026 Data)

We counted. On October 10, 2026, just 3,015 of the 119,649 remote listings on Himalayas (2.5%) were open to applicants in any country, and Jobicy's feed showed the same 2.7%. Here is the breakdown by role, what 'remote' usually means instead, and how to find the listings you can actually apply to.

Very few. On October 10, 2026, RoamJobs counted 3,015 of the 119,649 remote listings on Himalayas (2.5%) as open to applicants in any country. A second source agreed: 19 of 715 listings in Jobicy’s public feed for October 4–10, 2026 were marked “Anywhere” (2.7%). About half of remote listings are open to US applicants only (52.1% of Himalayas’ 10,000 newest listings, 53.1% of Jobicy’s feed). “Remote” usually means “remote within one country,” so read the location line of every listing before you apply.

The scam reality first

Because worldwide listings are scarce, they are also the bait in most remote-job scams aimed at people outside the US. A message that offers “worldwide remote work, no experience, high pay in USD” is describing something real listings almost never combine.

Real worldwide listings usually want specific, provable skills, run a normal interview, and never ask you to pay for training, equipment or “processing” before you’re paid. If a job reaches you through WhatsApp or Telegram rather than a board or the company’s own site, treat it as a scam until you can prove otherwise. Our guide to avoiding remote job scams lists the checks.

How we counted

We used two remote-only job boards that publish structured location data through public APIs.

  • Himalayas (himalayas.app) records, for each listing, the countries applicants must be in. An empty list means no restriction. On October 10, 2026 (UTC), its API reported 119,649 listings, and its search endpoint reported 3,015 with no country restriction. We also pulled the 10,000 most recently published listings (October 8–10, 2026) to measure how many were limited to a single country.
  • Jobicy (jobicy.com) marks each listing with a location such as “USA”, “EMEA” or “Anywhere”. We classified every listing in its public feed at fetch time: 715 listings published October 4–10, 2026.

We publish aggregate counts only. The script and the dated snapshot live in the RoamJobs codebase, and we re-run the count rather than editing numbers by hand.

What “remote” actually means on a listing

Any country252 (2.5%)19 (2.7%)
US applicants only5,208 (52.1%)380 (53.1%)
A single country (including US-only)9,508 (95.1%)543 (75.9%)
Several countries or a region240 (2.4%)153 (21.4%)

Himalayas sample published October 8–10, 2026; Jobicy feed published October 4–10, 2026. Jobicy uses regional labels such as “EMEA” and “LATAM” more often than Himalayas, which is why more of its listings fall into the “several countries or a region” row. We counted a regional label as covering every country in that region, which is generous: employers sometimes use “EMEA” to mean Europe only.

The pattern is the same on both boards. Roughly one listing in 40 is open to anyone, about half are US-only, and most of the rest are limited to a single other country.

Which roles are open worldwide most often

The table counts Himalayas listings matching each search term on October 10, 2026, and how many of those had no country restriction. Himalayas’ keyword search stops counting at 5,000, so very common roles show “5,000+” and no percentage.

Three things stand out:

  • Work judged by its output is the most open. Writing, design and front-end development are open worldwide about twice as often as the board average. A portfolio crosses borders more easily than a credential.
  • Licensed work almost never is. Nursing, therapy and most clinical roles require a licence in the patient’s country, so they are effectively country-locked.
  • Customer support is usually hired by country, not worldwide. If support is your field, search by your own country and for “non-voice” or chat roles rather than waiting for worldwide listings. See our guide to non-voice remote customer support jobs.

How to find the 2.5%

  1. Filter by eligibility first, role second. On Himalayas, set the country filter to your own country. That includes worldwide listings and jobs that name your country. On boards without a country filter, search “worldwide” or “anywhere” with your role.
  2. Check your country’s own pool. In some countries most eligible jobs name the country; in others almost all of them are worldwide listings. Our country-by-country count shows which group you’re in.
  3. Use the boards that tag location honestly. Our guide to job boards for international applicants ranks boards on exactly this.
  4. Confirm how you’ll be paid before the final round. “Open to any country” says nothing about payroll. Ask whether contractors in your country are paid through an employer-of-record provider, Wise, Payoneer or bank transfer. See remote jobs that pay in USD.

Limitations

  • Two boards, not the whole market. LinkedIn, company career pages and other boards have different mixes. These are measured readings from two boards that publish structured location data, not a census of all remote work.
  • The board’s labels, not ours. We counted what each board recorded. We did not read listings one by one, and some employers fill in location fields carelessly in both directions.
  • Keyword search is approximate. Role counts depend on how Himalayas’ search matches terms, and the 5,000 cap hides the true size of the most common roles.
  • A snapshot. These are October 2026 readings. Treat the exact figures as dated and the patterns as the useful part.

Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage of remote jobs are open worldwide?

About 2.5% in our October 2026 count. On October 10, 2026, 3,015 of the 119,649 remote listings on Himalayas had no country restriction. In a second source, Jobicy's public feed, 19 of 715 listings published October 4–10, 2026 were marked 'Anywhere' (2.7%). Most remote jobs are remote within one country, usually the United States.

Are most remote jobs US-only?

About half are. Of the 10,000 newest listings on Himalayas (published October 8–10, 2026), 52.1% were open to US applicants only. In Jobicy's feed for October 4–10, 2026, 53.1% were US-only. 'Remote' on these listings means you can work from home inside the US, not that anyone can apply.

Which remote jobs are most often open worldwide?

Writing, design and some software roles are open worldwide more often than average. In our October 10, 2026 count on Himalayas, 5.8% of listings matching 'content writer' and 4.9% matching 'graphic designer' were open to any country, against 2.5% across the whole board. Licensed and regulated work is almost never open worldwide: 7 of 1,345 listings matching 'nurse' (0.5%) were.

Are customer support jobs open worldwide?

Rarely, in our count. Only 108 of the 5,000-plus Himalayas listings matching 'customer support' were open to any country on October 10, 2026. Support teams are usually hired in specific countries, often the Philippines, India or Latin America, so searching by your own country tends to work better than searching for 'worldwide' in this field.

Does 'worldwide' on a job listing mean I will definitely be paid in my country?

No. It means the board recorded no country restriction. Payroll, tax and sanctions rules can still exclude some countries later in the process. Ask how contractors in your country are paid before you invest in a long application, and never pay anything to start a job.
