The Remote Job Board Index

Most "best job board" rankings repeat marketing claims. We measure instead: every week our crawler checks each board's own public data and records what it finds — with the method, date, and an honest "not yet measured" wherever a board can't be verified.

The RoamJobs Remote Job Board Index measures remote job boards every week using our own crawler — no estimates, no marketing numbers. As of Aug 25, 2026, 15 of 187 tracked boards have at least one verified measurement. The largest verified total is Himalayas with 103,745 live remote listings (remote-only board). Counts are not directly comparable across boards: aggregators index tens of thousands of listings, while curated boards like We Work Remotely list a few hundred paid, hand-placed roles — bigger is not better. Boards that block measurement (LinkedIn, Indeed, FlexJobs and others) are listed as "not yet measured" rather than guessed at.

Verified live remote listings

Ranked by the number of live remote listings each board itself reports, read directly from its public API, embedded page state, or page metadata on the date shown.

Read this before comparing: these numbers count different things. Aggregators (Himalayas, Arc) index listings from many sources; curated boards (We Work Remotely) list only roles companies paid to post. A bigger count means more volume, not more quality — check the scope column.

Count of listings matching the keyword 'remote' on the Chronicle of Philanthropy board — a keyword match, not a verified remote-only filter; some results may merely mention the word.

Posting freshness

Age of the newest posting in each board's public feed at measurement time. A fresh feed means active posting flow; it says nothing about total volume. Some boards here (Remotive, Working Nomads, Remote OK) expose only a recent subset publicly, so freshness is the only claim we can verify for them.

Methodology

What we do. Once a week, our measurement bot (User-Agent: RoamJobsIndexBot/1.0 (+https://roamjobs.com/tools/job-board-index/)) visits each board's public API, RSS feed, or listings page and records what the board itself publishes: listing totals, posting timestamps, and whether listings are publicly visible. Every value carries the exact URL and extraction method, the measurement date, and a confidence grade.

What we refuse to do. We don't run headless browsers to defeat bot protection, we don't crawl pages that robots.txt disallows, we don't hammer anyone's servers (one request every couple of seconds, a handful of URLs per board, weekly), and we never substitute a board's marketing claim ("over a million jobs!") for a measurement. When measurement fails, we keep the last verified value and flag it stale — or say "not yet measured."

What the numbers mean — and don't. "Live remote listings" is the count the board's own public data reported at measurement time. Scopes differ: remote-only board means every listing on the board is remote; board's own remote filter means we read the count behind their remote toggle; keyword search is the weakest scope — it may catch listings that merely mention the word "remote." Counts also aren't comparable across board models: an aggregator indexing 100,000 listings and a curated board hand-placing 200 are different products, not a 500× quality gap.

Honest limits. We can currently verify 15 of 187 boards — a minority. The biggest names (LinkedIn, Indeed, ZipRecruiter, FlexJobs, Wellfound) block bots, so the boards that are easiest to measure are overrepresented here. Counts measured from a board's own reporting inherit that board's counting quirks (duplicates, expired listings they haven't cleaned up, cross-posts). Treat single numbers as evidence, not gospel; treat week-over-week direction as the more reliable signal. We flag any value that swings more than 60% in a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does RoamJobs measure job board listing counts?

Our own measurement bot (User-Agent: RoamJobsIndexBot/1.0 (+https://roamjobs.com/tools/job-board-index/)) fetches each board's public API, feed, or listings page once a week, extracts the count or timestamps the board itself publishes, and records the value with the exact method and measurement date. We respect robots.txt, pace requests politely, and never estimate: if a board can't be measured, we say "not yet measured" instead of inventing a number.

Why does Himalayas show ~100,000 listings while We Work Remotely shows a few hundred?

Because they are different kinds of numbers. Himalayas aggregates remote listings from many sources, so its total is large. We Work Remotely is a curated board where companies pay $299 to post, so its live count is small but every listing is individually placed. A bigger number does not mean a better board — curated boards often have higher signal per listing. The scope column says exactly what each number counts.

Why are LinkedIn, Indeed, and FlexJobs listed as not measured?

They block automated measurement (bot protection returns errors to non-browser clients), and we do not evade blocks or violate robots.txt to get a number. Rather than repeat their marketing claims, we list them as "not yet measured." If a board later exposes a public count, our weekly run picks it up.

How often is the Remote Job Board Index updated?

Weekly. Each value shows its own measurement date. If a weekly measurement fails, we keep the previous value flagged as stale rather than silently guessing. This page was last generated on Aug 25, 2026.
